Skin tone and texture

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are a great way of gradually achieving and maintaining a natural, healthy, ‘just-refreshed’ look. There are numerous additional reasons why you should consider having a facial peel ranging from reducing fine lines, to treating mild hyperpigmentation, reducing pore size or simply wanting a more dewy, refreshed look to the skin.

Because peels work by removing the very top layers of the skin where dead skin cells normally accumulate, the skin appears more healthy, rejuvenated and improves penetration of other creams you may be using to rejuvenate the skin such as Vitamin C serum, Retinols etc.

As well as enhancing application and wear of make up by improving the skin surface texture, chemical peels may also help to reduce the amount of makeup required by treating conditions that we use make-up to conceal…overall a win-win situation!

A carefully timed course of chemical peels would be perfect before an important event such as a wedding party to get your skin in the best possible condition for those all important photoshoots!

The procedure

Chemical peels involve the meticulous temporary application of a liquid substance on the skin in order to achieve a smoother, more radiant and even skin tone and texture. Peels work by removing the most superficial layer of the skin where dead skin cells accumulate which is what gives untreated skin a dull, dehydrated and tired look. We use two different kinds of peels: light and medium strength peels.

Light peels e. g. glycolic acid peels are more appropriate for younger skin, and for skin prone to breakouts particularly with comedones (white heads and black heads). In our clinic we use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels to achieve a medium depth peel. This treatment is better suited for more mature and sun-damaged skin. For both types of peels, usually four to six weekly treatments are recommended for best results as a course of treatment, with maintenance treatments applied according to individual needs.

Treatments take no more than 10-15 minutes in total. During treatment you will feel a warmth and tingling sensation on the skin for a few minutes until the peel is neutralized or removed. With both types of peel the skin will look slightly red after treatment – this generally subsides within a few hours with the light peels but can take a few days to completely resolve with the medium depth peels, after which the skin may then start to peel. It is important to protect your skin from the sun before and during a course of peels. You will be given pre- and post-peel instructions and products for sun protection and to optimize the results of the peel.

Some people see results as little as 10 days after their peels. Other people won’t see results until about three weeks following their peel. And for people who receive many facial treatments a facial peel may just enhance the normal way their skin always looks.
