Fine lines and wrinkles

Wrinkle relaxing “botox” injections

With every facial expression the skin folds and furrows, and with age we lose elasticity of the skin, which then creates a wrinkle. Two different types of wrinkles exist: the dynamic lines and the static lines. Dynamic lines are triggered by facial expressions, and are known to respond very well to botulinum toxin, commonly known as “botox”, an injectable substance that interferes with muscle contraction thereby, softening lines and wrinkles. Its role in medical aesthetics became apparent twenty years ago, although it has been used in medicine for other reasons for at least three decades. Apart from its role in temporarily correcting wrinkles, it potentially prevents deeper wrinkle development. The other type of wrinkles, the so called static lines, are visible when the muscle is at rest, and these are best treated with a filler.

The procedure

The three most common sites for injection are the “frown lines” between the eyebrows, the “worry lines” across the forehead, the “crows feet” around the eyes, and the “bunny lines” on the nose. Tiny needles are used to inject the “botox”, which means there is very little and very short-lived associated discomfort. The actual procedure is quick, taking up to a few minutes to carry out, although planning the treatment takes longer and is covered during the initial consultation. Patients are advised not to do a vigorous exercise or lean forwards or lie flat for about 3 hours after the injections.

The “botox ” usually starts taking effect 5-7 days after the injection(s) and the final result is usually achieved after 10-14 days. Some muscles may respond faster than others, which can sometimes concern the patient especially if they have not been adequately informed. The effects of “botox” last 3-6 months and they are reversible. “Botox” is also very effective in temporarily reducing sweating, and we particularly use it for underarm sweating.
