10 tips on sunscreen

“Am I applying my sunscreen lotion correctly?”

The summer is here for good and whether working in London or partying in Mykonos or Ibiza, sunscreen lotion is (or should be) for many of us a routine part of our daily grooming. The selection of sunscreens or sunblocks is huge and it’s worthwhile doing some research prior to choosing the correct one for you. Here are a few tips on how to optimise the effects of your sunscreen lotion by applying it correctly:

  1. Sunscreen takes about 30 min to get absorbed by your skin. Therefore, try and apply it about 30 min before going in the sun.

  2. Apply it liberally to all sun exposed areas of skin. For an average adult body, the ideal quantity is equal to approximately 6 teaspoons of lotion  (corresponding to about 2 mg/cm2 of product, which is the quantity used when testing sunscreen lotions).

  3. Apply a second coat of sunscreen after 30 min. This will cover any potentially “missed” areas of your skin.

  4. If you are out in the sun you should reapply sunscreen after 2 hours.

  5. In case of excessive sweating or being in and out of water, sunscreen should be reapplied immediately. Remember: no sunscreen is entirely water-proof, but some are water resistant. It is good practice to re-apply your lotion after contact with water even if your sunscreen is labelled water-resistant.

  6. Get equipped with sufficient quantities of sunscreen for yourself and/or your family according to the length of your holidays, but also according to your everyday needs, your activities, your skin type and your geographic location.

  7. Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF), hence try and use a lotion with a higher SPF and re-apply more frequently.

  8. Remember to protect the skin around your eyes and your eyes with both sunscreen and sunglasses.

  9. Protect your lips; special sunscreen sticks exist, ideal for lips.

  10. Last but not least, applying sunscreen lotion is not enough to protect your skin from sun-induced damage, namely skin cancer and skin ageing. Adequate clothing and a broad-brimmed hat covering your ears and the back of your neck are essential.
